If the modernists a century ago considered industrialized life a mélange of images and sensations, life in today’s digital/postmodernist mashup era is just as complex and challenging. JoAnn Biagini in Minglements presents mixed-media assemblages that mix nature and culture: she transfers natural imagery onto discarded, disassembled books, creating lyrical metaphors for the complicated contemporary stream of consciousness, Carlo Fantin in Packaging explores the dark side of digital-era consumerism, cutting and drilling the shipping boxes from Amazon, UPS, and FedEx to reveal the inconvenient truths behind their smiling corporate facades. Pantea Karimi in Countdown: Biruni-Galileo-Apollo brings her interest in history, poetry and science to the subject of the moon, inspired by British Library manuscripts by Galileo and Biruni, the 10th-century Iranian Leonardo. Her prints and sculptures combine astronomical and anatomical diagrams, Persian poetry by Rumi and Attar and the still-breathtaking moonshot photos of fifty years ago. Can’t we blue-planet sublunaries get along sanely?
