JJ Grey & Mofro Club Critics' Pick Staff Pick

When: Fri., Sept. 12, 9 p.m. and Sat., Sept. 13, 9 p.m. 2008
Price: $20

JJ Grey hails from Florida and grew up on a diet of funk, soul, blues, gospel, and rock. With the help of his band Mofro, Grey combines these sounds into sharp, driving tunes that draw on the timeless sounds of the South without sounding the least bit retro. Grey is a compelling vocalist, with a slightly behind-the-beat style that brings his vignettes of working-class tribulations to vivid life. He punctuates his tales with his solid harmonica asides and on-the-dime rhythm guitar work. Mofro -- guitarist Daryl Hance, Hammond B3 and keyboard bass man Adam Scone, drummer AC Cole, sax player Art Edmaiston, and trumpeter Dennis Marion -- provide plenty of spice to the swampy brew their leader serves up and keep the dance floor in perpetual motion. JJ Grey & Mofroplay Friday and Saturday, September 12 and 13, at the Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $20.
