Jim Campilongo, Nels Cline, Chris Morrissey, and Josh Dion Staff Pick One Day Only

When: Tue., July 24, 8 p.m. 2018
Price: $22
Born and bred in the Bay Area, Jim Campilongo started playing in rock bands as a teenager, soon veering off into the improvisational sounds he explored with his first band, the Ten Gallon Cats, a combo that combined jazz, country, and Texas swing. His incomparable style has been described as a winning blend of Chet Atkins and Thelonious Monk, but any attempt to pigeonhole the music he plays will come up short. His influences include Django Reinhardt, Buck Owens, Bach, Duke Ellington, the Beatles, and a panoply of folk, blues, jazz, and rock artists. His use of comped chords, shimmering fills, long sustained notes, and iridescent overtones produces an expansive, unpredictable sound. This homecoming gig will feature his current trio — New York heavyweights Josh Dion on drums and Chris Morrissey on bass — with special guest Nels Cline, another guitarist whose work bridges the divide between folk, jazz, and experimental styles.
