Jigsaw Paws

When: Nov. 1-29 2007
Price: free

Five artists share this odd collective show. Augustine Kofie's draftsman-inspired collages perfectly recreate a mid-century office palette; the graphic lines and shapes continue enthusiastically onto the walls. David P. Madson's "Beer Drawings" seem at first glance like sketches created under the influence, but upon closer examination, the wavering contours and smudged lines of the drinkers and drinks are all carefully and artfully drawn, often reproducing the wobbly views of those who have had a few. Isla Prieto's collages and portraits are varied in their concept and execution, but "Oppenheimer" -- of the controversial scientist leaping before his blackboard, pointing heavenward -- is a revelation: at once jubilant and ominous. The Duke of Windsor's works feature a number of black-and-white band flyers in the style of the 1960s and 1970s. Brooke Reidt's intricate paper-cuts represent her fellow artists -- "Augie" is an owl, "David the Fish" is a feathery-tailed fish, "Isla" is an owl with the wings of a butterfly, and "The Duke of Windsor" is a vaguely humanoid torso adorned with the sweeping feathers of a peacock's tail. Jigsaw Paws runs through Nov. 29 at Mama Buzz Cafe, 2318 Telegraph Ave, Oakland. 510-465-4073 or
