I'm wondering if the editor of this article went to the same place or if he went stoned, but I went there today with a friend after reading this great review of Souley, and was taken aback from the start.
I did expect a 'hole-in-the-wall', and yes it was: The windows were grimey and the floor dirty. It would have cost nothing to clean the windows and mop the floor. It would take 10 minutes. The nasty tattered filthy lace drapes should be thrown away or burned, but who cares for decor if the food is good.
Mine was priced high enough I imagined it would be very good. Your mouth-watering review left me confident all was worth it even after the sloooow counter person said there was nothing to drink except water and we couldn't bring anything from outside in either. We waited, and waited, which seemed odd since there was only 3 other people in the resturant, we waited some more. Finally one dish came from the back and was put on our table. It didn't belong to us and we figured it out in time and the waiter took it to the other table.
Obviously something had happened at the other table because they were asking us what we had ordered and they made several trips back and forth to the counter asking about their food.
Much later, one more plate came out again to our table and it was ours. My friend sat with no silverware but it didn't matter because he insisted on waiting for my plate to arrive before he began to eat. We both ordered the same things: almost a 'dish-up" meal. A scoop of potato salad, some deep-fried tofu dipped in bbq sauce and half an ear of steamed corn. Give me a break. An untrained chimpanzee could have produced two of these plates in under 5 minutes, probably without drying out the tofu into a bitter chew toy.
We waited until the first plate of food was cool then my plate came, same as the other one but apparently it's too complicated to make two at once.
Let's see: break an ear of corn in half, cook it. When water cools put other half in and cook it. Put tofu in fryer and forget it till it's tough....you know what? even if you screw this meal up several times there's still no excuse to take more than 10 minutes, much less over half an hour to make it!!!? Do they make the bbq sauce from scratch, each order?
Please keep the secret to this stuff to yourself. How unfortunate it would be to find it again somewhere else.
I wish I had tried the lentils and greens. I'm sure they must be good, but I won't take the chance again.
