Dance companies survive on vision and grit -- a dream of beauty, and the white-knuckled determination to bring it to life. There's no better example of that than the Oakland Ballet. Founding director RonnGuidi revived the folded company in 2007, but his sudden departure last April caused it to fold again. This weekend, the phoenix of EastBay dance rises once more with Jewels of the Bay, a celebration of both the company's return and the Bay Area's world-class choreography and performance talent, at Holy Names University Valley Center for the Arts (3500 Mountain Blvd., Oakland). They'll stage a sampling of modern works by local favorites Val Caniparoli, Alonzo King, Amy Seiwart, Carlos Carvajal, and co-artistic director Michael Lowe. Here's hoping that the company can keep the vision alive this time -- clearly, this group has grit to spare. Friday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. $25-$30. 866-711-6037 or
