After Samuel L. Jackson’s #ICan’tBreathe challenge — a response to Eric Garner’s death — went viral, Chicago native Jessica Lá Rel created her own rendition, “We Can’t Breathe.” Her version, a song from her first EP Four Freedoms, rings like a powerful call to action against police brutality — only one of a few wrongdoings Lá Rel hopes to fight against. Lá Rel’s cinematic, jazz-inspired sound is heavily driven by social justice and civil rights. On one of her songs, “Brave,” she sings: To be brave — to say the unsaid to trod uncharted seas / To behave as if you know just what your world needs / To embrace the undone the unsung the danger of what you can’t see. Earlier this year, the singer-songwriter released two more projects, f(lux), a three-track EP that dives into rebuilding love, and Insurgency. Now, she awaits the release of her debut album, War Love. This weekend, Lá Rel’s will be at Zoo Labs for an intimate record listening party.
