Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter

When: Tue., Dec. 13, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $12

Neko Case and Jennifer Lewis might be the poster gals for the insurgent country movement, but the largely unheralded Jesse Sykes deserves just as much credit. Along with her collaborators in  the Sweet Hereafter, Sykes has quietly cobbled together a low-key yet powerful body of work. On this outfit's third album, 2007's Like, Love, Lust & the Open Halls of the Soul, Sykes applied her world-weary rasp of a croon to a country/folk palette while infusing textures and emotion, creating something akin to what Gram Parsons used to call "Cosmic American Music." This year's follow-up, Marble Son, finds the Seattle native and ex-Whiskeytown guitarist Phil Wandscher going down a psychedelic rabbit hole. While the droning ambience, chiming reverb, and splotches of feedback point to recent collaborations with doom metal outfit Sunn O))) and psych-rockers Black Mountain, these eleven songs also call to mind Haight-Asbury denizens Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. With help from opening acts the Watson Twins and Sean Smith, Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter will resurrect the spirit of Jerry Garcia at Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th Ave., San Francisco) on Tuesday, Dec. 13. 9 p.m., $12.
