Governor Jerry Brown appeared to dismiss a proposal being pushed by some Oakland leaders and pundits for the city to declare a state of emergency in order to free up state help, telling Sacramento reporters that “Oakland has to solve its own problems,” the SacBee reports. “The clergy, the Police Department, the Fire Department, the mayor, you’ve got to pull together in extraordinary ways to respond,” said the former Oakland mayor who still owns a home in the hills. “And as a citizen of Oakland, I wish you well and I’ll do my part.”
