Re: “The Fight Against the Penny

The relative value of a penny in 1913 would be anywhere between 17 cents and $3.86 today, depending on which value index you use. Based solely on CPI, a 1913 penny would be worth about one quarter (23.4 cents) in 2013. Clearly, the penny has long since outlived any practical purpose - unless, of course, you're the federal contractor that supplies zinc to the U.S. Mint.

Re: “Ignacio De La Fuente’s Sleazy Campaign Slides Into Bigotry

Let's not forget that last year De La Fuente repeatedly lied in front of the cameras that the Occupy encampment in Oscar Grant Plaza was causing more crime in downtown Oakland (while OPD's statistics were pointing to a double-digit DROP in crime during the same period), and pushed on a number of occasions to suppress the constitutional liberties of Oakland residents at the Occupy events, incl. by accusing the mayor of being "soft on crime" and pushing several measures through City Council to authorize the use of more violent means to shut down Occupy, incl. guns, tear gas, tasers, rubber bullets, bean bag projectiles. This current campaign is just another piece of evidence that De La Fuente simply does not belong to Oakland's political landscape in the 21st century.

Re: “Broadway Shuttle Safe Through 2014, Adds Evening Hours

A streetcar would be rad. And while we're at it, why not make it cross the estuary into Alameda via a small but efficient pedestrian/bicycle/rail bridge or drawbridge?
