Remind Me

Jennifer Brandon & Jay Defeo

When: Through May 11, 6 p.m.
Price: free
With an eye toward contradiction, and working through a particularly California and West Coast-centric lens, visual artist Jay DeFeo explored the cultural complexity of the United States in the 20th century. One of the first avant-garde artists on the West Coast and a pivotal figure in San Francisco’s community of Beat artists, DeFeo “cannibalized” her work through fragmentation, collage, and re-photographing, progressively making her way from the ordinary to the surreal to the visionary. View her rarely seen photocopies and photographs in this exhibition, which is perfectly coupled with new work from Bay Area photographer Jennifer Brandon. Through her photography, Brandon reveals the shifting landscapes, contradictions, and wild mystery of the world. Together, the artists’ works produce something strange, familiar, fragmented, and particularly ours.
