Re: “Will Oakland Become First U.S. City To Ditch Wall Street And Establish A Public Bank?

I agree with all the commenters who have a healthy dose of skepticism. Oakland government seems financially illiterate (and also governance illiterate- like filling potholes, or inspecting buildings for fire safety, the pension crisis coming, the myriad of ways in which Oakland city government has shown its ineptitude. Then there are the ethical challenges Oakland officials have as well. I wouldn't rush in- some things just have to be sorted out prior. Why not make a requirement of Oakland city officials, at least some, to "... have strong backgrounds in finance but also be dedicated to the mission of public service. "

Re: “Town Business: Taxing Short-Term Rentals, Uber, and Revenue Wreckage

Apparently Oakland has a huge issue with not being able to negotiate & administer contracts. The lack of competency in basic city government functions does not surprise me but it ought to.

Re: “Town Business: On the Oakland City Council's agenda for the week of January 18

Why does Oakland want to buy the parking garage back?

Re: “The Return of Don Perata?

I am glad we can find common ground at times Mr. Gammon. This stinks. Thanks for reporting.

Re: “Racial Profiling Via

Thank you Mr's. Thompson , e'Data & Pine for saying what I had thought when I read the article. In fact in my neighborhood on ND there is a preponderance of crime reported and perpetrated by blacks mostly with weapons and or physical violence. The writer should also be outraged for the high crime rate in Oakland and do a deep dive there but that might be a dog bites man story. On my ND feed there is almost an overly sensitive element to race- like people not reporting the racial characteristic of the perp or suspicious character white, black, yellow, brown or purple. Nod to Ms. Montalbo - I think the ebexpress response to capitalization issue says a lot about why they publish this crap rather than do a story on crime and criminals is supremely telling. Really isn't the story the more than 30,000 victims of crime each year in Oakland or isn't it at least part of the conversation. I would say the EBX is better than that but really it's not.

Re: “The One-Stop Market Invasion

Your bias and contempt is showing through. You call it the "pending invasion" I call it a rescue- we need a lifeline - Oakland was failing and flailing. The fact is Oakland is a mess, a top city for crime, city hall has so many flubs it seems that they cannot manage their way out of a paper bag. One way out of this mess is employment opportunities and money and that is coming. Is city hall accountable at all? We pay high taxes and seemingly get poor services and you know who suffers the most the lower socio economic class, but always the pandering of politicians whose lip service is to help the poor and disadvantaged. San Francisco is hardly Manhattan and Oakland is certainly not Brooklyn. Perhaps an alternative to what is coming would have been a well run city (but even then market forces trump) but we haven't had that. I am excited that Sunset Magazine is locating here and that Uber is too, and I'll take 5 more and I think it will be a shining moment for Oakland. It was so strange that SF & silicon valley were so innovative and it passed Oakland by, forcing those who work in fields of innovation to commute long distances (1-1.5 hrs each way) perhaps no more, perhaps they will be able to work where they live and live where they work. Cheers mate!

Re: “Oakland Man Facing Deportation for Nonviolent Drug Crime

Here's a different perspective- what if your child was sold the ecstasy pills and overdosed and is living in a vegetative state, psychologically impaired or dead. This man worked at the casino for 16 years - he obviously knew that selling X is illegal and had fluency in english. He should have been on his best behaviour not his worst in a host country with no good options on where to go- though I'm not sure that Cambodia is not desirable to be deported to it has changed a lot since he came here, foisting drugs on people. These are large quantities he got caught with , no telling how many times he did this without being caught. By saying that his almost 4000 illegal doses have "no identifiable victim" is a parsing the fact that there are victims just not identifiable - what if it was the kid at Cloyne court at UCB in a vegetative state? I'd say he's already been given his 2nd chance and in the US it's 3 strikes and your out.
