Re: “Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and La La Land: Same Old Song And Dance

All the trailers for this film left me in a semi-coma. To even remotely compare this film/these actors with Jacques Demy or Umbrellas of Cherbourg (or for that matter, Catherine Deneuve!) is insulting at best. Not only is the singing and dancing VERY crappy but the actors themselves are boring to watch. Eating a dinner of pre-chewed and regurgitated food is more like it.

Re: “'The Walk' Will Make You Sigh and Cheer

Too bad they cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the lead!I couldn't watch a 30 second ad with him, much less the length of a feature film. But to add to that the cultural differences between him and Petit? Truly terrible casting.

Re: “Turning Housing into Hotels

What is truly creepy is how this is all done in the name of "improving the local economy", i.e. the ads that tout how much local businesses thrive on all the airbnb clientele, and how easy it is to not follow even the laws that are in place. For example, in LA I stayed in an airbnb which was being rented out by not the owner but the renter who lived in another timezone and had been making money like a bandit doing that for many moons. I sincerely doubt the owner was even aware that their unit was on airbnb.

Re: “Jacking Up Rents in Oakland

Sadly, I don't see Oakland offering much protection at all to its renters.
I rented a single family home in the Temescal for nearly 19 years and the landlord without any advance notice whatsoever, informed me by email March 7 that he was coming over with his realtor on March 9 to sell the house, effective immediately. There were two showings and escrow closed May 7. I'm over 60, work part-time and have a small pension from my late husband. I was paying $1550/month rent plus all utilities. There had never been any problem whatsoever in all those years in regards to rent/maintenance/etc. I was then subjected to daily pressure from his realtor who wanted to "help me" find a place. It was a nightmare trying to find a place with two cats after nearly 19 years, and I would rather stick needles in my eyes than go through that again. I'm moving to Contra Costa County now and good riddance. It should be ILLEGAL for owners of property with long term tenants to give them less than 48 hours notice that they're going to put the house on the market.

Re: “Far from the Madding Crowd

The original Far From the Madding Crowd was to my mind, such a superior piece of work, that I truly don't understand why anyone would try to do it again. There are so few masterpieces of film that stand the test of time 50 years later. With all due respect to the cast and crew of the 2015 version, I just don't get it.

Re: “Slow Food for Felines

Although I agree with the general move towards raw for cats, grinding bones removes three major benefits found in eating raw, unground bones.
1) Raw, unground bones act as "nature's toothbrush" for cats;
2) They provide a physical crunch pleasure for those sharp teeth. (A major reason kibble is popular is that it faintly approximates crunching small bones such as found in mice and small birds.)
3) They also provide emotional release for animals whose teeth were intended to gnaw on raw meat and raw bones in the wild.
That said, the best size bird bones for cats (commercially available) are quail.

Re: “Review: An Audience with Meow Meow at Berkeley Rep Is Not Quite Purrfect

The promo that BRT sent out on this show was so completely snoozers that I wasn't even remotely tempted to part with my hard-earned $$. Do we really need another self-absorbed, hyperhetero/drag queen in genetic female clothing - flashback to the 80's anybody? But thanks for the review, which confirmed that I'd dodged a bullet, i.e. total irreversible coma in a theatre seat. You can almost hear the little wheels a churnin' at the BRT board meeting "we've got to get the (YOUNGER) men with high tech pockets in here people?!?"
