Re: “Guns for Guns N' Roses

It's sad that Chip Johnson's article was so inaccurate. First, he did not mention all the other things we were giving away including computers, $100 gift cards, and Warriors tickets. Second, we were not just targeting Sobrante Park, a neighborhood I have spent a lot of time working in. This exchange was for anyone and we did pick up a lot of guns this weekend and will pick up more next week. Third, this was not Measure Y funded. I do work on a Measure Y project that has helped find employment, health care, and other services to dozens of people in Sobrante Park and West Oakland, but this gun exchange was a special project that did not use any Measure Y funds. While many criticize gun exchanges for their effectiveness, we had several Oakland mothers and grandmothers turning in guns that they were afraid their teenage child may get their hands on. We raised awareness and there is no way to measure that success. Last, it's not legal for the city to sell donated tickets on EBay but if you would like to donate money, for every $100 you donate we can get one more gun off the street next Saturday. By the way, I have driven down 105th plenty of times listening to all sorts of music but I have also spent countless hours in Sobrante Park organizing summer programs, helping to find employment for youth, participating in events where we rehabilitated people's homes, and helping residents learn how to access services more effectively.
