Japonize Elephants

When: Thu., June 24, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $10

Protean styles and ever-shifting lineups don't always become an indie band, but in the case of Japonize Elephants, instability pays dividends. Featuring such local stars as saxophonist Mitch Marcus, guitarist Sylvain Carton, and violinist Dina Maccabee, the band qualifies as experimental rock or avant-gypsy music, which means it could work the pub circuit on Saturday and headline a nerd fest on Sunday. For all their whimsy, Japonize Elephants play incredibly patient, genre-grappling, complicated music. Even their instrumentation is interesting: junk percussion mixed with tenor sax, accordion, vibes, bass, guitar, fiddle, and banjo. They'll play the Starry Plough (3101 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley) on Thursday, June 24, with miRthkonand WITT/Snuffy. 9 p.m., $10.
