Janiva Magness

When: Sun., June 13, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $18

Blues powerhouse JanivaMagness has lived the hard luck life she sings about. Both her parents committed suicide; she was hooked on hard drugs as a teenager and lived in various foster homes. A job at a recording studio led to a few gigs as a background singer where her hair-raising intensity captured the attention of Bob Tate, Sam Cooke's musical director, who helped her put her first band together. She has won a legion of die-hard fans with her intense vocal style and soulful backing band, and recently won the BB King Blues Entertainer of the Year award. Magness and her band play Sunday, June 13, at Biscuits & Blues (401 Mason St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $18.
