Re: “Oakland Housing Rights Activists Face 8.5 Years in Prison

With the housing market in crisis all over the bay area, who would even bring a lawsuit to this? I can only hope that cooler heads will prevail. This suit is complete nonsense considering everything that is going on. Steve 'successfully achieved ownership' of a house that was falling to pieces. I can see how they might make a trespassing charge stick - but once Steve became the actual legal owner of the property - what's the point in blowing time and money on this court case? The neighborhood IS IMPROVED by way of a dilapidated shooting gallery now made into a home with a garden. Who is hurt by this aside from some banker who left the place to blight the neighborhood by not being a responsible owner of the house? I think the idea here is that Steve and others might set a precedence which would inspire others to take the matter of what is going on within their own neighborhoods into their own hands. "Many of the empty housing units are being held by speculators, driving up prices" - -meaning If the speculators cannot make money off a house that it should rot and bring down the whole neighborhood until they can make money off of it - This kind of 'speculation' is predatory and ruinous for the health and well being of Oakland
