James Russell

When: Mon., Aug. 13, 7 p.m. 2012

Civil Rights and antiwar movement supporter James Russell's seventh book, Escape from Texas, follows a slave also named James to the soon-to-be Lone Star State. There James finds that, although slavery might soon be ended, freedom is a possibility as remote as this Mexican outpost. Meticulously researched and spanning the period surrounding Texas' War of Independence, Russell's book examines James' world from every point of view -- slaves, owners, Indians, and Mexicans -- all seeking the riches and freedom that were the promise of the West. Russell discussed the book on Monday, Aug. 13, at Revolution Books (2425 Channing Way, Berkeley). 7 p.m., free. 510-848-1196 or RevolutionBooks.org
