West Oakland’s Ivy Moon dishes out American fare informed by chef-owner Tanesia Sellman’s Southern roots. Sellman doesn’t have any formal culinary background, but you wouldn’t guess it by looking at her dishes. The cooking shows precision, ambition, and flair — nearly every plate is lovingly adorned with edible flowers — while also packing explosive flavors. The restaurant is open all day, but brunch is the main draw. Don’t miss the shrimp and grits, which ranks among the best in town, or the stunning blackened cod sandwich.
