Kristin Scott Thomas, acting in French, walks through this dour drama with a hang-dog expression no one can interrupt, and with good reason: her character, Juliette, has just been released from prison for killing her young son years before. Trying their best, or not, to help Juliette get on with her life are Elsa Zylberstein as her sister, and Serge Hazanavicius as the skeptical brother-in-law, worried about the safety of his two daughters. All the above are gently, sadly pushed and pulled through writer-director Philippe Claudel’s scenario with a maximum of interrogatory close-ups, adding up to a very gray character study indeed. She had her reasons (117 min.).
