Romantic comedy
How to turn a routine middle-aged romantic comedy into sudden gold: Hire Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin to portray a successful (what else?) but lonely restaurant owner, her divorced but still interested husband, and the meek architect she hires to remodel her home, respectively. Then stand back and let them work. Writer-director Nancy Meyers has made a career concocting these rom-com roundelays (Baby Boom, Father of the Bride, etc.), and this time she’s blessed with a blue-ribbon cast, plus a surprising amount of sex. The laughs keep on coming in spite of the corny situations (119 min.).
