It's an Act

Acting has proven its worth as preparation for politics.

Actors enjoy a type of fame that often transcends their roles and propels them into politics. In the wake of the Reagan presidency, the influence of the entertainment industry on the US political system isn't exactly news, but the extent of its proliferation may shock many. Here's a look at some of the more notable recent celebrity politicians.

Clint Eastwood
Starred in spaghetti Westerns and violent cop dramas; elected mayor of placid, crime-free Carmel, California.

Fred Grandy
Parlayed his memorable role of Gopher on The Love Boat into an Iowa congressional seat.

Shirley Temple Black
Biggest child star of Depression era, the crooner famous for "Good Ship Lollipop" later served as UN ambassador under Nixon, and ambassador to Ghana under Ford.

Sonny Bono
Singer best known for TV variety series with his former wife, Cher; elected mayor of Palm Springs and California Congressman before tragic death in a skiing accident.

Joey Marquez
Actor-turned-mayor of Philippine city Paranaque; sued along with other members of Social Justice Society Party for continuing to make films after being elected.

Fred Thompson
Film and television actor turned US senator from Tennessee. Decided he preferred acting after all; currently starring in the TV drama Law & Order.
