A small town with a guilty history, decomposed youngsters, a ghostly killer clown, rotting infrastructure, eerie paintings come to life, a bottomless well, a mobile made of the corpses of missing kids, a haunted house, numerous bullies, and, as a sop, the sweet promise of young love. Novelist Stephen King -- aided and abetted by director Andy Muschietti and adapting writers Gary Dauberman, Cary Fukunaga, and Chase Palmer -- throws everything he knows into this gaudy, hyperactive horror pic. And it’s a grand way to kill a couple hours, but let’s not go overboard. It’s more or less a rethinking of Stand By Me from the gothic grandiose point of view. With Jaeden Lieberher, Sophia Lillis, and Bill Skarsgård (135 min., 2017 rated R).
