Comedy, Documentary, Program
George and Mike Kuchar, twin brothers from the Bronx and now San Francisco, have been making extraordinary – also extraordinarily weird and wonderful – mini-epics in Super 8 since the late Fifties, and this gratifyingly film-nerdy documentary by Jennifer M. Kroot introduces us to them. We catch up to the Kuchars at George’s San Francisco Art Institute film class and hear an impressive bunch of admirers – John Waters, Atom Egoyan, Wayne Wang, Buck Henry, Guy Maddin – tell us why “the Mozarts of 8mm Cinema” are the most amazing filmmakers you’ve never heard of. Now it’s time for somebody to reissue some of the brothers’ more than two hundred titles (86 min.).
