Adventure, Animated, Comedy
At last, another imaginative Wes Anderson animated adventure, in this case the story of the mingled destinies of a pack of unwanted junkyard dogs and the inhabitants of a Japanese city – all highly fictionalized and outfitted with Anderson’s trademark elaborate scene-setting, an anti-military-industrial tone, and a huge, superb cast of voice talents. The stop-motion cinematography by Tristan Oliver is irresistible, as are the voice characterizations by Liev Schreiber, Bryan Cranston, Scarlet Johansson, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, et al. As with Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Grand Budapest Hotel, one viewing may not be enough to drink in all the eye candy. The screenplay is by director Anderson, from a story he wrote with Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Nomura Kunichi, who portrays the dictator-like mayor of Megasaki (101 min., 2018, rated PG-13)
