Re: “Is Brix 581 Squatting in Riddim?

@eric. The majority of time that it took to open the venue was because when I bought it, the building was in horrible condition, even worse than the last owner claimed. It took the building department 6 months to approve my building plans. They initially wanted me to put an elevator in the property to appease title 24 requirements that allow handicapped people in the venue, even though I pointed out that the second floor was a dance-floor. They eventually capitulated when I agreed to put a smaller dance-floor on the first floor of the venue. But the Oakland building department is full of the worst type of bureaucrats that have no interest in helping you, in fact, they choose how much overtime they work, so it's actually in their interest to nit-pick and be as adversarial as possible to your project. I pretty much took that entire building apart and put it back together again.

Re: “Documenting Oakland's Recyclers

I live in Dogtown, right down the street from Alliance. My neighbors and I very much dislike Alliance for it's documented and repeated neglect of our neighborhood. Unfortunately, the homeless who gather here, also piss, shit and do their drugs (a lot of them are addicts) right across the street from our houses. I've found needles in my yard more than a few times. I salute the hard working homeless people I see busting their arse to make a living, it enrages me to no end that Alliance takes no responsibility when it comes to cleaning up after the people they make so much money off of.

Re: “No More Cops Without More Cuts

Pensions for retired police and fire need to be addressed if Oaklands budget problems are ever going to be solved. Overly generous retirement benefits have been a bigger drain on our governmental services than just about any other cost on the books.

Re: “Underground Dining Goes Online

Sounds like a great idea and/or fun time! As a proprietor of a soon-to-be brick and mortar restaurant, I can't help but wonder how it's fair competition when these meetings don't have to bother getting all the licenses that a legitimate business, or approval from county health inspectors is fair? All of these business expenses add up to a lot of money and not all restaurants are owned by multinational LLC's with endless pockets. I'm sure that all of the underground dining venue's practice the strictest of health practices, no one wants anyone to get sick, but I can't help but think it puts a lot of us mom-n-pop restaurants at a distinct disadvantage...
