Wily old champ Michael Caine and coltish young challenger Bill Milner (Son of Rainbow) go toe-to-toe in a battle royal of maudlin about a cranky, heartbroken former magician and the sensitive but ghost-obsessed boy he meets when he moves into the kids’ parents’ senior citizens’ home in the North of England. Caine wins by a TKO in the eleventh round but it’s nip and tuck all the way, thanks to Peter Harness’ screenplay — no stone left unturned in the death department. Directed perfunctorily by John Crowley, who’s done better work — like Boy A. Costarring Anne-Marie Duff and Morrissey as Mum and Dad (95 min.).
