Re: “Rich, Black, Flunking

UCB has some of the best science labs, equipment, teachers etc in the country. I vote a partnership between BHS & UCB where students still fulfill a science requirement, but may have to attend classes at the college. Really not my idea, I graduated from EO Smith High School at the University of CT in '70. For some reason, we all aspired to Berkeley, then! Here's some thoughts I have (raised 2 white/blk kids in W Central FL thru the 80s & 90s):
1) accept AA kids as bilingual, Ebonics as a valid language
2) the "melting pot" that is America has NO universal culture EXCEPT blk culture (the impact on white kids should be explored, intersting!)
3) acknowledge AA's as unique from Caribbean & African Blks
4) acknowledge the "dumbing down" of American education in general
5) acknowledge the racist justice system as it impacts AA's with respect to future employment opps
6) investigate Oprah, Cosby, JZ, Jackson & Johnson & yes, Tiger! as a true model for achievement in AA children
7) integrate the loss of manufacturing & the rise of the service economy into education
8) acknowledge the economics of 2 parents in the workforce & single parent families
9) acknowledge the intelligence of the 2-4yr olds
10) educate ADULTS on the Carter Admin's population study in the 70's
11) rethink what education needs to become in the 21st century
If budgets require it, Sciences are the ONLY subjects that should STAY in schools.
