Horror, Thriller
Proves conclusively that not all Spaniards make good horror movies — not even the guy who made 28 Weeks Later. At the same time an English teenager named Mia (Ella Purnell) is haunted by recurring nightmares, we follow the similar story of Juan (Izán Corchero), a young boy in Spain also being visited by a faceless nocturnal terror. Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s mise-en-scene is not scary or unnerving in the slightest. He seems to be trying – with the help of screenwriters Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques — for a Freudian psychodrama, but never finds the right film language to tell the story, and the sputtering narrative further clogs things up. Not even the presence of Clive Owen, as Mia’s troubled father, sheds much light on this flat bedtime monster story. (100 min.)
