You could call Intronaut a true musician’s band: Seemingly unbound by any constraints (physically, stylistically, and otherwise), the LA outfit pushes the outer reaches of progressive technical metal on its fourth album, Habitual Levitations (Instilling Words with Tones). Marked by heavy grooves, jazzy undertones, clean singing, dizzying riffage, and complex rhythmic and songwriting structures, the album grows organically into all sorts of unexpected directions. While not as straight-forwardly aggressive as the band’s earlier work, it’s still accessible — at times quite pretty — not to mention heavy, using dynamics to great effect. It would pair well with the new album by Palms, latter-era Mastodon, and anything by Tool. But really, Intronaut doesn’t feel derivative at all. See the band at Slim’s (333 11th St., San Francisco). With Scale the Summit and Castle.
