International Body Music Festival Concert

When: Sat., Dec. 4, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $22.50, $23.50

Most dancers perform tomusic; with body music, the dancers are the music. Probably the earliest rhythmic accompaniment to human movement, body music encompasses flamenco clapping, hambone slapping, stepping, and countless other percussive innovations hailing from Mexico, Appalachia, Brazil, Turkey, and beyond. Experience the chest-whomping, toe-tapping, knee-slapping rhythm and motion at the International Body Music Festival Mini-Fest at the Freight & Salvage (2020 Addison St., Berkeley) on Saturday, Dec. 4. With a curated roster of California- and Bay Area-based artists, including hambone master Danny "Slapjazz" Barber, stepper and former STOMP cast member Khalid Freeman, flamenco artist Cerro Negro, and belly dancer Elizabeth Strong, the evening promises traditional, contemporary, and truly syncopated performances. The festival begins earlier in the day with workshops ($20 each) for teachers on integrating body music into creative, math, and language-arts programs -- and why not teach kids to literally follow the beat of their own drummers? 8 p.m., $22.50-$23.50. 510-644-2020 or InternationalBodyMusicFestival.com
