On Austin post-punk act Institute’s debut album, Catharsis, vocalist Moses Brown sputters out anguished missives through spittle and bile. It’s a taut record, with rigid riffs set to martial percussion in the anarcho-punk style, but Brown is unrestrained, evoking a drunk’s sloppy misery. The band’s earlier EPs, “Salt” and “Giddy Boys,” only suggested this sort of auto-evisceration; Catharsis realizes it to a grotesque extent. All of that makes the listening pleasure here somewhat perverse, since Brown’s miserablist delivery has a decidedly sickly, unhealthy dimension. It also makes the prospect of a live show quite intriguing, which explains the excitement surrounding Institute’s upcoming performance at the Night Light (311 Broadway, Oakland) on Thursday.
