Innovative California Dance Films

When: Fri., June 24, 8:30-10 p.m. 2011
Price: $8-$10

While flicks like Step Up and Stomp the Yard fill the multiplexes with dance and romance, a coterie of choreographers and cinematographers are filming on the fringes and reinventing dance for the camera. Taking their cue from Maya Deren rather than from Hollywood, they experiment with moving pictures and moving bodies to show dance in ways it could never be seen onstage. As a hotbed of both film and dance, California offers fertile ground for their talents, which the Subterranean Arthouse(2179 Bancroft Way, Berkeley) highlights during its Innovative California Dance Films festival on Friday, June 24. Curators Daria Kaufman and Charlotte Shoemaker screen films that range from humorous to impressionistic, including several by Bay Arean artists such as filmmakers RJ Muna and Erik Koziol and dancemakersErika Chong Shuch, Jess Curtis, YannisAdoniou, and Paige Starling Sorvillo. 8:30 p.m., $8-$10. 1-800-838-3006 or SubterraneanArthouse.org
