Comedy, Mystery
The outright funniest moments in Inherent Vice belong to Josh Brolin. His "Bigfoot" Bjornsen is a tightly wound ball of neuroses disguised as a macho police detective. But Joaquin Phoenix delivers the real virtuoso performance, making his perennially stoned private investigator, “Doc” Sportello, our guide to a complex conspiracy involving the decline and collapse of the love generation. The two men anchor a huge, gasping mammoth of a movie packed with dense dialogue, confusing plot twists, and a brilliant cast of memorable characters. It’s a brilliant adaptation of a brilliant Pynchon novel (148 min.).
