Even when the Indigo Girls were toiling away for major labels Epic and Hollywood Records, the duo always had the feel of an independent act -- sweet singing folkies with a lefty chip on their collective shoulders. The Indigos' new album, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, find the twosome releasing its first independent album, and, in true iconoclastic fashion, have put out a two-CD set that features plugged-in and acoustic versions of these ten new songs (along with a bonus cut on the unplugged portion). Filled with the expected mix of cutting harmonies, acoustic jangle, and enough strum-and-twang to evoke artists ranging from Joni Mitchell and the Band to R.E.M., Emily Saliers and Amy Ray address everything from colonialism and fallen friends to love's endurance. The Indigos will be feeding its brand of outspoken socially conscious tofu to the masses on Wednesday, May 13 at Zellerbach Hall (UC Berkeley, Berkeley). 8 p.m., $38.50. CalPerformances.org
