The sterling combination of Philip Roth’s 2008 novel, with adaptation and direction by James Schamus (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Brokeback Mountain), plus actors Logan Lerman, Sarah Gadon, and Tracy Letts, yields a first-class dramatic dissection of the mid-20th-century American Dream. In 1951, a bright but discontented Jewish-American student from New Jersey (Lerman) finds small-college life in Ohio troublesome, thanks to an adversarial dean (Letts) and a seductive but disturbed blond coed (Gadon). This argumentative young man is playing for keeps with America at the height of its power – he can only lose. Also among the cast: Linda Emond, Danny Burstein, and Ben Rosenfield. Incisive and provocative (110 min.).
