Science fiction, Thriller
Mission Incomprehensible. Leonardo diCaprio and his crew of psy-op spies ransack the subconscious minds of their adversaries while they sleep in order to steal corporate secrets. Or some such. Which gives writer-director Christopher Nolan an excuse to drag in lots of expensive locales and a large, largely wasted cast (Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy), and to loop the plot back on itself endlessly. But it boils down to an ordinary spy flick anyway, with laughable dialogue. When he first started out with Memento, Nolan’s fans enthused about what he could do with a big budget. Now the obverse is true – he should have most of his budget taken away from him. He’ll only muck it up. One way to salvage some fun with this blunderbuss would be to fall asleep while watching and dream up a better movie yourself. Try it. You’ll avoid a headache. Costarring Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Tom Berenger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (149 min.).
