Emotionally powerful, poetically structured drama shows what happens when Jeanne and Simon Marwan, a grown pair of Montreal twins (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin and Maxim Gaudette), go to an unnamed Middle East country (a Lebanese flag is flying) to discover, via flashback, what happened to their late mother Nawal (Lubna Azabal, in a magnetic performance) during that country’s brutal civil war in the 1970s. The sorrow-drenched scenario is the work of playwright Wajdi Mouwad, brilliantly adapted by director Denis Villeneuve and set in nightmarish Jordanian locations where we can feel the hot violence of the air in the last row of a crowded theater. Even Montreal looks depleted. Costarring Rémy Girard and Abdelghafour Elaaziz. (130 min.)
