Comedy
Hilarious, brutally barbed, UK-produced political satire makes fun of British and American government and military flunkies in the run-up to an unspecified war — but we all know it’s the W. Bush/Tony Blair invasion of Iraq in 2003. The chief target of TV producer Armando Iannucci (The Thick of It) and his team of four other writers is the spinelessness of career bureaucrats on both sides of the Atlantic who really only care about saving their careers — the collateral damage in Iraq is secondary. Terrific tantrums and shocking, awful equivocation by actors Peter Capaldi, Tom Hollander, James Gandolfini, Gina McKee, Chris Addison, Anna Chlumsky, David Rasche, and the rest of Iannucci’s cabal of timid warmongers. The payoff is inescapable: these characters’ diddling cost thousands of lives. Should stand right alongside Dr. Strangelove (106 min.).
