At a French high school, a quiet student named Claude (Ernst Umhauer) attracts the notice of a demanding teacher named Germain (Fabrice Luchini) because of Claude’s intriguing serial essay, based on his observations of the family of a classmate named Rapha (Bastien Ughetto). Complications multiply when Claude’s “study” makes him seem a predatory stalker, at the same time that Germain becomes completely captivated by the story his young protégé is writing. Writer-director François Ozon (Potiche, Swimming Pool), working from a play by Juan Mayorga, has a tiger by the tail as well. This supremely well plotted and acted scenario captivates us slowly, but we become as obsessed as the teacher, while simultaneously alarmed by his student’s calculating manner – shades of Patricia Highsmith, Alfred Hitchcock, and Claude Chabrol. When we add in the support playing of Kristin Scott Thomas as Germain’s perceptive wife and Emmanuelle Seigner and Denis Ménochet as Rapha’s unsuspecting parents, this deceptively profound character study grabs us like few similar dramas ever could. One of Ozon’s best (105 min., 2012, rated R)
