Drama, Thriller
Elizabeth Olsen gets a workout in the starring role of this picturesque, slightly morbid adaptation of Émile Zola’s novel of dark passions, Thèrése Raquin. Married to her sickly first cousin (Tom Felton) and under the thumb of his mother/her aunt, a nagging shopkeeper (Jessica Lange), Thèrése finds illicit solace in the arms of family friend Laurent (Oscar Isaac). But trouble is lurking on the horizon. Olsen is nothing less than sensational as the haunted young woman, with able support by the whole cast, especially Lange, Felton, Matt Lucas, and Shirley Henderson. Directed with definite gothic horror overtones by Charlie Stratton, from a screenplay he adapted from Neal Bell’s play, in turn adapted from Zola’s book. Gabriel Yared’s music score also plays an integral part in the melodrama (107 min.).
