Biography, Drama
More than a parade of Bob Dylan parodies, I'm Not There (the title of one of Dylan's most famous bootlegged recordings) is filmmaker Todd Haynes' electrifyingly impressionistic portrait of the artist -- an appropriately split narrative, with six actors combining non-chronologically to play Dylan at different stages of his life. Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, and young Marcus Carl Franklin contribute moving vignettes as Dylan's various egos, with excellent support by Charlotte Gainsbourg, Julianne Moore, Bruce Greenwood, and fellow folkie Richie Havens as travelers along the road. The soundtrack is pure gold: a few Dylan originals and many covers by the likes of Los Lobos, John Doe, Tom Verlaine, Sonic Youth, etc. A remarkable mosaic tribute, written by Haynes (Far from Heaven) and Oren Moverman (Face, Jesus' Son) (135 min., 2007).
