Marye, do you identify yourself as a member of the tea party? You make as little sense as Michelle Bachman.

Re: “Thursday Must Read: Amazon.com Offers to Back Off Ballot Measure; Fremont Solar Company Closes Despite $500 Million Federal Loan

Amazon knows that they have gotten away with an end run around the law which is why they are trying to bribe the state to allow them to continue the way that they help their customers cheat on paying the sales tax that is due.
I'd like to see what would happen if the state offered an amnesty period and afterwards went after everyone who did not pay the sales tax due on "out-of-state" purchases.
The lost revenue has been a big contributer to lay-offs, cutting of services, and closings of brick & mortar stores who employ local people.
I have not seen any comments suggesting an alternative approach to level the playing field or replace the revenue.

Re: “Friday Must Read: New Bill Would Block Amazon.com Ballot Measure; Shark Fin Ban Moves Forward

BTW, everyone is required to pay sales tax on purchases from other states (or in-state Amazon partners,) not just businesses, individuals too. It's the law, but rarely enforced.
I also agree that sales taxes are regressive (and undocumented workers pay that tax without representation,) and think it's lousy that governments find it an easy way to raise revenue, but it is the way that the vast majority of states go.
Regarding moving the goalposts - This isn't a football game. (btw, NFL moved the goalposts for the 1933 season, as well as other rule changes.) New laws are written all the time and just because 1 company's business plan was to find a way to cheat state and local governments, doesn't mean that they should be immune from new laws. Do you really think it's unfair to make hidden video cameras in private places illegal just because it's a new technology and there weren't laws in place before?
Regarding protesters- I do think protesting injustice is important and most people understand that getting arrested is part of non-violent civil disobedience. Most people who cheat on paying their taxes are doing it to save money, not as a political statement. These same people are happy to drive on public roads, send their kids to public schools, call 911 for emergencies etc.

Re: “Friday Must Read: New Bill Would Block Amazon.com Ballot Measure; Shark Fin Ban Moves Forward

Max, although Amazon isn't collecting the sales tax, your business is still required to pay it when you pay your sales tax collected or state income tax. So, you just put it out there on a public forum, that you are breaking the law. Pretty gutsy.
Most people just quietly break this law and that's why it's time to make online retailers collect the state sales tax. The exemption for collecting goes way back to the time before computers, but nowdays, when Amazon can advertise directly to you based on what is in your "private" emails, they can easily handle the accounting.
Lastly, allowing out-of-state etailers to avoid collecting sales tax gives them an unfair advantage over local stores. Money leaves the state and hurts the economy as the local stores lay off employees and eventually close. If you like having small, locally-owned stores, support them and the collection of sales tax by Amazon and all online retailers.
Max, it's probably not too late to pay all that sales tax that you owe. Maybe if you call first, they'll give you a break on fines and penalties.

Re: “BART Proves Cellphone Shutdown Was a Mistake

I'm appalled at all the complaining folks whose easy lives were slightly inconvenienced by the protests. Remember, the protests were the result of a BART police officer shooting and killing an unarmed man (he had already thrown his knife.)
The vast majority of people in the USA are too complacent. If we have our tvs, cell phones, food in the belly and a roof over our heads, we choose to be ignorant to the suffering of others.
When they come for you, it will be too late.
As for BART shutting down cell phones, all's fair in love & war.

Re: “Friday Must Read: Amazon Pumps $3 Million into Anti-Tax Measure; Odds of Double-Dip Recession Go Up

Mike, and any other Californians who think shopping from Amazon saves you from paying taxes - you are violating the law unless you pay those sales taxes when you file your state income tax.
It is unlikely that you'll be caught, but because the tax is not being collected, it hurts state and local governments' ability to provide services and it's hurting your local merchants who are required to collect the sales tax.
The federal law needs to be changed to keep up with the times. If Amazon can read your email and target an ad specifically for you, they can keep track of collecting sales tax for the 45 or so states that have sales taxes.
