Yes, Marie has it correct (as do the Chronicle): Over his lifetime a black male in Oakland is roughly as likely to be murdered as to have graduated high school at that level.

It's such a shocking statistic that it's understandable the initial reaction is skepticism, but this article is incorrect and should be updated to clearly note this. The author gets confused here and compares the *annual* chance of being murdered with the *lifetime* graduation rate.
