Biography, Dark comedy, Drama
This dramatized rehash of the checkered career of disgraced Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding (Australian actress Margot Robbie) has quite a few comic moments, but the laughs are pretty cheap. Better to focus on Robbie’s solid portrayal of the ferociously competitive Harding, and especially Allison Janney’s perf as her harpy-ish mother, who doubles down on every single bad decision her daughter makes. Director Craig Gillespie (Million Dollar Arm) and writer Steve Rogers have a ready-made Bad Sportsmanship poster girl in Tonya, backed by a fine gallery of half-wits played by Sebastian Stan, Paul Walter Hauser, and Anthony Reynolds. Should prove a powerful antidote to annoyingly worshipful screen jock bios (119 min., 2017, rated R)
