Horror
No one is ever going to confuse Steven R. Monroe’s remake of Meir Zarchi’s 1978 slasher pic with The Passion of Joan Arc, but this ostensibly silly horror quickie possesses a formal sophistication that would make Carl Theodor Dreyer sit up and take notice. An attractive but naïve young writer (Sarah Butler) rents a secluded country cabin to work on her novel, but four local cretins humiliate and gang-rape her. Then she returns to wreak graphic vengeance. Despite its superficial resemblance to Deliverance and countless female revenge flicks, this recondite legend tends more toward Scandinavian art cinema of the Fifties -- particularly Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring. The spatial relationships, the close-ups, the medieval forest setting, even the presence of a mentally challenged young man (Chad Lindberg) forced by his mates to violate Jennifer, all lend to the mood. All the while, the mythology remains as pristine as a grove of birch trees. Costarring Andrew Howard as the monstrous sheriff. Adapted and directed by Monroe. (107 min.)
