Biography, Historical drama
Tom Hiddleston is not quite right in the lead role, but that’s not the worst thing wrong with writer-director Marc Abraham’s inert, static chronicle of country music idol Hank Williams. The dialogue is for zombies, and the film spends very little time on the musical pursuits — composing, recording, etc. — that made Williams beloved. Sad-eyed Elizabeth Olsen is watchable (barely) as Hank’s grumpy wife Audrey, with Cherry Jones as his controlling mother; Bradley Whitford as Williams’ mentor, music publisher Fred Rose; and Wrenn Schmidt and Maddie Hasson as two of Hank’s late-period paramours. For what it’s worth, Hiddleston does a passable job signing Hank’s hits — but he doesn’t possess the original’s high, lonesome moan, and he never will. Put it in the drawer with You’re Cheatin’ Heart (123 min.).
