Drama, Science fiction
Part sci-fi, part romance, and most of all a wholly engrossing drama of emotions. A molecular biologist (Michael Pitt), hard at work on the study of a landmark evolutionary link based on the human eye, finds time to fall in love with an enigmatic young woman (Catalan actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey) – but things don’t work out as planned. Spiritually-minded writer-director Mike Cahill, who made the ambitious but flawed Another Earth, hits his stride here. Actors Pitt, Bergès-Frisbey, and Brit Marling (from the earlier film) combine and recombine enchantingly in much the same frame of mind as Terence Malick’s The Tree of Life, but more coherently. Recommended (113 min.).
