Romantic comedy
The difference between filmmaker Dan Mazer’s marital comedy about a mismatched, fundamentally dissatisfied, newlywed couple named Nat (Rose Byrne) and Josh (Rafe Spall), and the usual oatmeal-ish British romantic lifestyler, is that Mazer doesn’t really seem to like these people. That in itself is newsworthy. Further, poor Nat and Josh are ensconced in a nest of ill-wishers, with every single character seemingly on the verge of hysteria, annoyed with each other and constantly jockeying for position, but joylessly. It’s a relief when the punch line, “Will you divorce me?” finally arrives. It’s funny, yes, but also depressing, like watching the mating habits of mollusks. Written and directed by Mazer, and costarring Stephen Merchant, Jason Flemyng, Simon Baker, and Minnie Driver (97 min.).
