Historical drama
Everything you were aching to know about that fateful weekend in 1939 when King George VI of England (Samuel West) and his wife Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) paid a visit to the country home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Bill Murray, looking dyspeptic) and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (Olivia Williams) – with FDR’s distant cousin and secret lover Margaret Stuckley (Laura Linney) hovering sheepishly in the wings. Hampered by Murray’s awful acting and the far-fetched intrigue of mousy Margaret’s front-seat shenanigans, the only things director Roger Michell has to fall back on are the décor and the bit parts. Richard Nelson’s screenplay easily wins the White Elephant prize. What an odd movie for someone to want to make. (94 min.)
